Wild salmon on B.C’s North and Central Coasts are in crisis and it is causing widespread ecosystem, cultural and economic harm to the region. A basic tenet of wild salmon management and conservation is the fundamental understanding of the status and health of salmon populations throughout their natal spawning streams and rivers. However, Fisheries and Oceans Canada (DFO) is not providing enough funding and support to monitor these populations adequately and neglects its own data in management decisions. It’s time for the DFO to reinvest in wild salmon.
