Pacific Wild’s Board of Directors is currently seeking a self-motivated, and experienced Executive Director to strategically lead the organization, as well as provide oversight and supervision to the Operations, Development, Communications and Campaign teams.
Reporting to the Board of Directors and as an integral member of the senior leadership team, the Executive Director will work to ensure seamless team management and oversee the development, delivery, quality assurance and evaluation of Pacific Wild’s Strategic Plan. The Executive Director will be responsible for creating an annual plan, informed by the strategic priorities set collaboratively by the staff and the Board of Directors. The Executive Director will be accountable for all operations and is the organization’s principal representative and spokesperson. The Executive Director will manage a growing team of communication experts, film makers, photographers, writers, researchers, scientists and support staff all responsible for developing and delivering conservation and donor development campaigns that are strategic, science-based and focused on positive conservation outcomes. Navigating and managing multiple relationships with key stakeholders is required in this role, as is the focus to build and lead a high-performing, collaborative, and engaged team.
- Represent and communicate Pacific Wild’s vision, values and strategic programs to all staff and stakeholders;
- Lead Pacific Wild in developing, implementing and evaluating strategic conservation and organizational decisions;
- Liaise, communicate with and report to the Board of Directors;
- Maintain, build upon and deepen Pacific Wild’s connections and relationships on the lands and waters of the Great Bear Rainforest and throughout the Pacific Northwest, specifically with Indigenous leaders and community members, as well as in relevant conservation, community, business and political spheres.
- Collaborate closely with the senior leadership team, including the Managing Director;
- Take a lead in developing and implementing strategies that will maximize synergies amongst staff and between Pacific Wild’s program areas;
- In collaboration with the Managing Director:
- Ensure an effective framework of governance to provide the direction, policies, standards and guidelines within which the organization’s work is conducted;
- Promote effective recruitment, training, engagement, retention and development programs for all staff;
- Oversee a dynamic, motivated and passionate team to achieve strategic conservation-oriented goals in the Great Bear Rainforest through evaluating staff performance, providing feedback and regular reviews, support and establishing training goals as needed;
Team Management & Development
- In collaboration with the Managing Director and the HR Manager, conduct a skills-needs assessment of current staff, develop and implement a professional development program and lead recruitment and onboarding to fill any outstanding skills-gaps;
- Work with conservation and communications team staff to develop strategic work plans, objective performance measures and goals, to ensure staff efforts support the overarching strategic goals of the organization, are consistent, and are subject to high-quality evaluation;
- Instil a sense of accountability amongst all team members by modeling individual and organizational performance standards;
- In collaboration with the HR Manager and the Board of Directors, manage and liaise with external contractors and advisors.
Planning and Strategic Duties
- Work with the Board and staff to establish the strategic direction of the organization, developing short and long-term plans to achieve the strategic direction, and reporting on successes;
- Oversee the organization’s activities by setting goals, developing partnerships, maintaining strong relationships with key funders, applying for grants and program funds, and actively researching opportunities to protect and conserve the Pacific Northwest bioregion of North America.
Communications and Community Relations
- Oversee the organization’s communications and related strategies and ensure that all print and electronic media are up to date and communicate the organization’s key messages;
- Build and maintain strong relationships with diverse stakeholders, as necessary, including federal and provincial governments, First Nations, academia, local communities, and the environmental sector;
- Facilitate, attend and represent Pacific Wild at key meetings and events, including meetings with government representatives, other advocacy groups, community members, as well as public talks and local events;
- Conduct media interviews for both print and broadcast media to disseminate key messages and information for marine campaigns.
Fundraising and Donor Relationship
- Oversee the organization’s fundraising goals and work with the Development team to achieve fundraising goals;
- Assist the Development team by providing information for grants and donor relations including responding to email inquiries;
- Lead grant proposals and ensure all opportunities for program funding are pursued.
- Assist in fundraising campaign development and implementation;
- Maintain and nurture relationships with major donors.
Operations, Financial and Administrative Management
- In collaboration with the Managing Director, oversee the annual budgeting process and manage fundraising to meet budgeted needs;
- Oversee the maintenance and working operations of the office space.
Required Skills & Experience
- Demonstrated experience leading in the service and development of others, with the ability to develop a shared vision and strategy within a team and provide a strong sense of direction;
- Skilled relationship-builder with the presence, sensitivity, maturity, political savvy, diplomacy, and passion to generate respect and inspire confidence and action with donors, community agencies, key stakeholders, the Board, staff, and volunteers;
- Strength in hiring, recruiting, managing, developing, coaching, and retaining individuals and teams, empowering them to elevate their levels of responsibility, span-of-control and performance;
- Ability to think strategically and creatively, devising strategies that will ensure the organization can meet its current and future mandates while maintaining focus on the organization’s nature and long-term evolution;
- Excellent negotiation and presentation skills, with experience delivering key messages to a variety of audiences including media interviews;
- An active user of social media and new media technologies;
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with an ability to write and speak concisely and persuasively to diverse audiences, including the media and in large group settings;
- Strong decision-making skills demonstrated by strategies that move the organization forward, effective goal setting, action planning and evaluation of successes and failures;
- Strong knowledge of and extensive experience in BC coastal conservation and First Nations stewardship;
- Demonstrated high degree of scientific literacy and ability to distil complex information into simple and engaging messaging to effectively guide public communication of campaign issues;
- Strong project management skills and experience managing complex, multifaceted projects resulting in measurable successes and program growth;
- Experience having worked with a high-performance, collaborative, constructive peer group;
- Demonstrated commitment to social justice and experience organizing within a decolonization framework;
- Proficiency with Microsoft Word and Excel, Google suite of Applications; experience with Adobe Creative Suite, Bloomerang and Fundraise Up an asset;
- Demonstrated experience managing projects in dispersed and remote regions an asset;
- Experience working and collaborating with scientists, conservationists and educators is an asset.
Qualifications & Education
- Post- secondary degree
- Minimum 10 years’ experience in non-profit /conservation sector
- Minimum 5 years in senior management role
