📣 Pacific Herring Update – Strait of Georgia

🐟 The Food & Bait herring fishery in the Salish Sea closed this Thursday at 11:59 PM, with 1,732 tons of herring removed from the ecosystem. But the season isn’t over, and there will be little respite for herring as they prepare to spawn.

The larger and more well-known roe herring fishery opens next, targeting only the eggs, while most of the herrings’ bodies reduced to fish meal and oil, contributing little to Canadian food security but taking heavily from the ecosystem.

❗Licence holders from the Food & Bait fishery will have the chance to fish their unfinished shares in the roe fishery. Pacific Wild will be monitoring the roe opening closely, sharing updates on fishing pressure and highlighting the urgent need to protect this foundational species.

📣 British Columbians have spoken — loudly. The results of our recent poll made it clear that the public wants stronger protections for wolves, not cruel killing contests or programs.

🐺 What we found:

Only 19% of those polled are aware that more than 2,500 wolves have been killed in the B.C. government’s wolf cull since 2015, costing taxpayers over $11.5 million.
Two thirds disagree with using aerial gunning from helicopters to kill wolves—one of the main methods used in the government’s wolf cull.
More than half believe that killing wolves is wrong, even if it’s done to save other species.
76% oppose trophy hunting wolves in British Columbia.
Only 27% know that the Government allows rampant wolf hunting with minimal oversight.
Three out of four respondents oppose killing wolves with leg-hold traps, neck snares, and through killing contests.
Over 70% agree that wolves are an iconic Canadian species and play a vital role in the ecosystem.

The public mandate is here. Now the government needs to act.

👉 Click the links in our bio to read more about the poll and to tell the government to end the wolf cull for good.

🐺 We took to the streets (and to the polls) to find out how people in British Columbia feel about wolves.

The data is clear — and so is the message from British Columbians:

Wolves are not the problem.
They’re iconic. Intelligent. Essential.

📉 Only 9% blame wolves for caribou decline
🌲 Most point to habitat destruction, fires, and climate change
🚁 66% reject aerial gunning
🏞️ 71% believe wolves play a vital role in keeping ecosystems healthy
and balanced, and should be protected

Most British Columbians believe killing wolves is wrong — even in the name of conservation.
Yet thousands are still being killed, largely out of public view. It’s time to stop the cruelty and protect what makes Canada wild.

Take action: Visit the link in our bio to send a letter to B.C. Ministers demanding an end to the Government’s wolf cull program, and to see more of the polling results.

🌟 Happy International Day of Women and Girls in STEM!

💪Today we’re celebrating the incredible women pushing boundaries in science, tech, engineering, math, and research, including our campaign and research team made up entirely of brilliant women.

🎓 From PhDs to Masters students to Dean’s list grads and law school stars, our campaign and research team proves that big brains and big hearts power real impact!

But even as we celebrate, there’s still work to do:

🔬 Women make up roughly 31–41% of active researchers globally, a big improvement over past decades, but there’s still work to do. In academic publishing, women are still underrepresented, especially in senior authorship roles. In some journals women account for only about 35% of authors overall and less than 25% of first authorships.

This gap matters and representation shapes opportunity. When girls see women scientists, engineers, and researchers, in classrooms, textbooks, labs, and media, they’re more likely to believe that those paths are possible for them too. ✨

🌍 To ALL the women and girls in STEM: keep shining, keep asking hard questions, and keep building a future where every curious mind belongs in science.

💡Fun fact! Killer whales (orcas) are matrilineal, meaning they are a female-led society! Killer whales are one of only 6 known species (including humans) to experience menopause and grandmothers play an important role teaching and guiding younger whales.

🚨 3 proposals. 3 chances to speak up!

The B.C. government is considering changes that would increase hunting pressure on wolves, caribou, and black bears — including inside a provincial park and in regions where wildlife is already under serious stress.
