Job Posting: Communication Manager

We are hiring a Communication Manager based in Victoria, British Columbia who is passionate about conservation, storytelling and media.

Pacific Wild is currently seeking an experienced, full-time, Communications Manager with a successful track record of delivering campaigns across multiple channels and platforms.  The Communications manager will contribute to and drive campaigns that are visually compelling, engaging, strategic, science-based and focused on positive conservation outcomes.

The Role

The Communications Manager acts as a public-facing voice of Pacific Wild Alliance (PWA) and has the responsibility to continually elevate Pacific Wild’s public profile, support base and followers through creative storytelling and outreach of the organization’s mission, goals and projects. The Communications Manager works with the team to plan and execute short and long-term communications strategies using visually stunning media and well-written content that draws positive attention to the organization’s conservation efforts on the BC coast.

Responsibilities

Communications Materials

  • Write a variety of copy in collaboration with the PWA team for a variety of applications including but not limited to social media captions, web content, newsletter communication, video scripts, press releases and form letters.
  • Ensure content is factually accurate, easily understood and engaging.
  • Maintain exceptionally high-quality control across all posted content.
  • Ensuring the rules set out in the Pacific Wild Brand Guide are being respected.
  • Create relevant and informative press releases, press kits, newsletters, and related marketing materials.
  • Track and record PWA’s media presence and ensure database is up to date.
  • Help coordinate print and electronic comms materials including, but not limited to, posters, e-newsletters, brochures, blogs and journals.
  • Update website news sections with blogs and media articles.
  • Creating/modifying blog posts, media stories, actions and campaign pages
  • Email newsletter: develop copy, design, disseminate, and manage responses.
  • Streamline community engagement and action by helping develop NewMode form letters and Advocacy Actions and embedding Advocacy Actions on website.

Social Media  

  • Work closely with the Project Director and Director of Community and Systems to plan an overarching strategy to enhance PWA’s social media presence, brand identity, and fundraising using clearly defined goals and monthly reviews.
  • Ensure timely and relevant updates to PWA’s social media platforms including Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter and other new platforms.
  • Engage supporters, including the public, the media, and industry, in a respectful and inspiring manner.
  • Execute social media strategies, build content calendars, produce video projects in collaboration with the video team and manage the community on all platforms.
  • Implement strategies to maximize synergy, interaction and click-through between platforms and ensure that each platform is being used appropriately and effectively based on its inherent algorithms and current trends.
  • Develop and implement strategies to boost posts and use paid ads effectively.
  • Monitor social media channels for industry trends, particularly within the conservation sector,
  • Track breaking news and new information in key areas and disseminate both internally and externally.
  • Interact and respond to inquiries, comments and direct messages on social media channels.
  • Develop and foster relationships with influencers and stakeholders to maximize reach.
  • Attend events and produce live social media content, or work with other staff in attendance to obtain and develop materials.
  • Measure effectiveness of communications pieces and social content by tracking analytics and adjusting plans as required and ensure that ongoing work is tracked and recorded appropriately.

Campaign Development & Execution (Internal)

  • Collaborate with the team to develop and execute ground-breaking advocacy campaigns.
  • Work with all staff to develop, coordinate and disseminate conservation and development campaigns across relevant communications platforms.   
  • Monitor communication project timelines and ensure requirements and project deliverable dates are clearly communicated with the team and met.
  • Coordinate and facilitate relevant meetings and use systems such as Monday.com to collaborate and track project progress.
  • Stay on top of media and industry trends in order to optimize campaigns and strategies. 
  • Build and maintain relationships with NGO’s, businesses, Indigenous groups, government officials, and others.
  • Build relationships and seek opportunities with traditional news outlets such as radio, print and broadcast.
  • Develop and implement effective search engine optimization (SEO) strategies.

Required Skills and Experience

  • At least 3-5 years of experience in a communication role.
  • Diploma or degree in the following fields communication, journalism, marketing, english.
  • Experience with digital, social media marketing, email campaigns and press are necessary.
  • Graphic design and/or video production skills are considered an asset.
  • Demonstrate expertise in writing compelling and creative copy for necessary mediums.
  • Strong leadership, relationship-building and collaboration skills required.
  • Experience in G-Suite, Mailchimp, Later, WordPress, Monday.com, Adobe, Google Analytics is a plus.
  • Experience as a writer or journalist is an asset.
  • Knowledge of /interest in natural history, ecology and conservation in B.C., UNDRIP, the history and current the treatment of Indigenous peoples in Canada is an asset.

This is a full-time, permanent position working from our office in Victoria, BC.  Relocation assistance will be evaluated for the successful candidate; however, only those legally entitled to work in Canada will be considered.
