🌊 Dive into the new year refreshed! Did you know some seaweed regrows each year? Seaweeds have life cycles just like plants on land. Some are annuals, while others are perennials!
On the British Columbian coast, bull kelp is an annual species that often dies off and gets swept away by winter storms, completing its life cycle in a single year. Meanwhile, giant kelp is a resilient perennial, sticking around for a lifespan of around seven years.
Both play vital roles in the underwater world, showcasing the amazing diversity of marine plant life.

Together in 2024, we sparked over 1,000 news stories, sent 35,000 letters demanding change to decision-makers, reached 7 million viewers worldwide with our videos, analysed millions of data points, and participated in dozens of government consultations, stakeholder meetings, and engagement sessions.

As the snow falls and winter begins, Pacific Wild would like to thank Whelan Construction for their significant annual contribution to the campaign to end the wolf cull in British Columbia.
‘Whelan’ is Irish for ‘little wolf’, and the company—which operates out of Vancouver—is supportive of our efforts to stop the wiping out of interior wolf packs by the provincial government of B.C..
Only habitat protection and restoration will save endangered mountain caribou—the wolf cull program is not only horrifically inhumane and expensive, it is ultimately a screen to hide ongoing logging, road-building and habitat destruction that further imperils caribou, no matter how many wolves are killed each winter.
If you have been through the Vancouver Airport recently, you will likely have noticed some of Whelan’s major projects this past year: a complete rebuild of the security screening area for domestic departures—now open, bright, airy and efficient—new e-gates, and new apron drive bridges. As you’re using this greatly improved infrastructure, remember that Whelan is deeply committed to protecting B.C.’s wolf families, just like you.
Part of Whelan’s annual gift to our organization also funds major purchases on our technology wish list, such as part of the hardware and software that houses our hundreds of terabytes of photography and film assets—a critical piece of Pacific Wild’s ability to educate and engage around how wildlife is managed in B.C..

🌲Ever wondered how trees survive freezing winters? It’s not just about shedding leaves—trees go through an amazing internal transformation called acclimation to prepare for sub-zero temperatures.
☀️ Stage 1: As days shorten in late summer, light-sensitive photopigments signal trees to begin dormancy.
❄️ Stage 2: When temps drop below 10ºC, trees replace saturated fatty acids in their cell membranes with unsaturated ones, which freeze at lower temperatures, helping them adapt to the cold.
Once fully acclimated, trees achieve cold hardiness, a superpower that allows some species to survive extreme temperatures. They remove water from inside their cells, storing it safely in spaces where freezing won’t cause damage. Incredible species like black spruce and trembling aspen can endure temps as low as -80ºC!

🐟 While rivers may seem quiet in winter, beneath the gravel, salmon embryos are hard at work developing inside their eggs. Water temperature and salmon species determine how long this incubation takes, but by spring, these tiny embryos will hatch as alevins, still tucked safely under the gravel.
❄️ Winter isn’t just about survival—it’s the beginning of the next generation of salmon. The season’s cold, oxygen-rich waters are vital for their growth, setting the stage for their journey from alevins to fry.
