Pacific Wild’s latest conservation campaign explores the importance of Pacific salmon and why monitoring spawning streams is so essential to our coast.⁣
⁣
Wild salmon are crucial to the B.C. coastal ecosystem – they feed coastal communities, marine mammals, bears, eagles and wolves. At the end of their life cycle they provide nutrients to the Great Bear Rainforest, literally feeding the forests we love. Rather than tackling the root of the problem by closing fisheries that intercept threatened stocks, protecting habitat and increasing monitoring, Fisheries and Oceans Canada (DFO) continues to turn a blind eye to our wild salmon crisis.⁣

To our valued supporters,⁣
⁣
As we head into 2021 in British Columbia, wolf packs are getting ready to welcome new young in early spring. Bears are deep in their dens, still lush from fall feeding on late summer fish runs and berries. Salmon have out-migrated from their home streams on the North and Central coast and the eagles and ravens have scavenged the last of the carcasses from the spawning grounds.⁣
⁣
This past week, on #GivingTuesday, you were heroes at home, helping us raise $107,665 towards Pacific Wild’s 2021 conservation campaigns!⁣
⁣
Because of you, the wolves of British Columbia will soon have advocates in the courtroom, proving the illegality of the wolf cull aerial gunning program according to both provincial and federal laws. Organizations across B.C. have joined together in a historic call to the B.C. Government to address old-growth logging as it impacts endangered caribou, and #SaveBCWolves.⁣
⁣
Because of you, the Government of Canada is being held to account over the failure to support the #SalmonCount - key monitoring activities on the North and Central coast.⁣
⁣
And thanks to you, British Columbia’s last functioning Pacific herring population has amassed a legion of support across the province calling for a moratorium on commercial fishing to allow the population to recover. We are proud to be among the conservation organizations, First Nations, and residents of communities protecting the healthy future of these #BIGLittleFish.⁣
⁣
Thank you for your passion and generosity, especially in 2020. You are our heroes.

𝐒𝐨𝐜𝐤𝐞𝐲𝐞 𝐬𝐚𝐥𝐦𝐨𝐧 #𝐒𝐩𝐞𝐜𝐢𝐞𝐬𝐒𝐩𝐨𝐭𝐥𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭 𝟑 // Sockeye eggs hatch in the winter and newborns remain sheltered by gravel, living off their yolk sacs for some time. During spring, these young fish emerge into freshwater habitats as fry. Unique to the five Pacific salmon species, sockeye will spend one to three years living in freshwater systems with lakes. During this time, they feed on zooplankton and small crustaceans before their journey to the ocean. ⁣

𝐒𝐨𝐜𝐤𝐞𝐲𝐞 𝐬𝐚𝐥𝐦𝐨𝐧 #𝐒𝐩𝐞𝐜𝐢𝐞𝐬𝐒𝐩𝐨𝐭𝐥𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭 𝟔 // While they may be small in comparison to other species of wild Pacific salmon, sockeye are the most economically valuable thanks to their highly sought after meat. They also are intrinsically linked to First Nations practices and culture here in the Pacific Northwest. Here’s a few sockeye salmon facts to help you distinguish them:⁣
⁣
𝐋𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐧 𝐍𝐚𝐦𝐞: Oncorhynchus nerka⁣
𝐂𝐨𝐦𝐦𝐨𝐧 𝐍𝐚𝐦𝐞𝐬: Red salmon, Blueback salmon⁣
𝐀𝐯𝐠 𝗪𝐞𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭: Usually between 5 and 15 pounds⁣
𝐀𝐯𝐠 𝐋𝐞𝐧𝐠𝐭𝐡: Typically 24 to 33 inches⁣
𝐀𝐩𝐩𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐞: Smaller in size to other species. Have a bright red colouring during spawning season⁣
𝐒𝐩𝐚𝐰𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐈𝐧𝐟𝐨: Require lake systems to rear in⁣

𝐒𝐨𝐜𝐤𝐞𝐲𝐞 𝐬𝐚𝐥𝐦𝐨𝐧 #𝐒𝐩𝐞𝐜𝐢𝐞𝐬𝐒𝐩𝐨𝐭𝐥𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭 𝟒 // Sockeye salmon hold significant cultural value to First Nations communities. In fact, the name sockeye comes from a bad translation of the word “suk-kegh” from the Halkomelem language (part of the Coast Salish language family) which means red fish. For thousands of years, First Nations people have depended on wild Pacific salmon as an important source of food and trading. These fish are deeply embedded in their culture and identity.
