In a world filled with challenges, it`s important to pause and celebrate the wins—big and small—that remind us change is possible. Here`s your dose of #PositiveNews from British Columbia and beyond!
🐺 Nonlethal wolf deterrents outperform lethal ones!
A new study finds that nonlethal methods to protect cattle from wolf predation work far better than lethal control. It’s proof that coexistence is not only possible, but more effective.
🐟 The slhawt’ (herring) have returned to Átl’ḵa7tsem (Howe Sound)!
This long-absent keystone species is now revitalizing both the ecosystem and Sḵwx̱wú7mesh cultural practices.
🌊 Another orca calf joins J Pod!
J40 has been spotted with her first calf, J63—the fourth Southern Resident calf born in the last year. Every birth is a beacon of hope for this endangered population.
⭐ Fjords offer sanctuary for endangered sea stars.
New research shows that the cool, salty fjords of B.C.’s central coast are providing refuge to sunflower sea stars, helping them persist despite the devastating impacts of sea star wasting disease.
🦇 Penticton is officially a Bat-Friendly Community!
Through habitat enhancement and education, this B.C. city is championing bat conservation.
🐳 No fin whale hunt in Iceland this summer!
Iceland’s largest commercial whaling company is pausing operations for 2025, citing low demand. Conservationists see this as a turning point toward ending commercial whaling for good.
Together, these stories remind us that change is happening—and it`s worth celebrating.

Weaponized Suffering
After a decade of provincial claims that British Columbia’s wolf cull is humane and necessary for caribou recovery, newly released documents tell a different story.
Wolves caught in B.C.’s wolf cull aren’t euthanized with a single shot, as the government claims.
Many endure multiple gunshots, with painful delays between wounds and death.
Freedom of Information (FOI) documents reveal that contractors are using firearms designed for rapid-fire, —not for precision—leading to prolonged suffering during chaotic aerial operations and riddling the landscape with bullets.
Not only is it inhumane, it should be illegal. Semi-automatic weapons of this kind are prohibited from being able to fire more than 5 bullets at a time. These have been modified to shoot 30.
Yet again, the government has granted itself an exemption, putting aside public safety to put wolves at risk.

Sign of Death
Wolves are captured and fitted with radio collars—not for science, but for slaughter.
A collared wolf is known as a “Judas Wolf”—released to return home, unaware it carries the signal that will lead hunters directly to its pack.
One by one, its family is killed.
The wolf watches. Survives.
And is often used to kill again.
Even pups have been collared.
Born into betrayal and used to lead others to their deaths.
After a decade of provincial claims that British Columbia’s wolf cull is humane and necessary for caribou recovery, newly released documents tell a different story.

Digital Stalking – technology is turning the forest into traps and wolves into targets.
Freedom of Information Request documents reveal that game cameras are used to locate wolves for the cull.
Some wildlife cameras can transmit images directly to smartphones—providing real-time intelligence for the kill.
This kind of tech-assisted hunting is banned for the public under B.C.’s Hunting Regulations.
This is just another example of the government abandoning its own regulations, and employing every trick in the book in its war on wolves.

Baited and Betrayed
Government contractors take advantage of ranchers’ livestock carcass piles to track and kill wolves.
These open piles of dead livestock exploit wolves’ natural instincts and violate B.C.’s Wildlife Act—which prohibits leaving attractants that could draw in dangerous wildlife.
Yet FOI records show this tactic is used often.
This is just another example of the government abandoning its own regulations, and employing every trick in the book in its war on wolves.
After a decade of provincial claims that British Columbia’s wolf cull is humane and necessary for caribou recovery, newly released documents tell a different story. After reviewing more than 1,600 pages of internal government records obtained through Freedom of Information (FOI) requests, Pacific Wild uncovered disturbing truths about B.C.’s wolf cull—wolves hazed to exhaustion by helicopters, baited with livestock carcasses, shot multiple times with prohibited weapons, and tracked using surveillance technology.
