Did you know there is more than one way to harvest herring roe? 🎣
The spawn-on-kelp fishery has been an essential thread of many coastal economies since time immemorial. By laying hemlock boughs or kelp fronds in herring habitat before the spawn, some First Nations fishers such as the Heiltsuk, create ideal conditions for herring to lay their eggs which can then easily collect after the fish have spawned.
This sustainable roe fishery allows the fish to keep returning for many future years to spawn again and again, unlike the larger commercial gill net and seine fishery which captures Pacific herring before they spawn. In this fishery, egg sacks are cut out of pregnant herring, killing the fish and ending their life cycle.
❗Pacific herring populations are in trouble, and Fisheries and Oceans Canada is welcoming feedback on their management plan until November 27th. 🗓️

Here are four fun facts to share while watching the spawn!
Why does salmon conservation matter?
1️⃣Food chain titans! Salmon nourish over 100 species, including bears, wolves, and birds.
2️⃣ Forest feeders! After spawning, salmon’s nutrients enrich surrounding soils and rivers, fueling vibrant ecosystems.
3️⃣ A fish in decline: salmon populations are declining due to habitat loss (especially critical spawning streams degraded by logging and dams), parasites and pollutants from open-net pen salmon farms, changes in prey availability, overfishing, and climate change.
4️⃣A cultural icon: salmon are culturally important to many coastal First Nations along the Pacific Coast and central to important ceremonies such as the First Salmon Ceremony (which, though it differed between Nations that practiced it, always shared an underlying theme of respect for the salmon as a gift).
