Welcome to The Return of the Great Bear: Film Screening! Join Pacific Wild at Paul Phillips Hall in Victoria, B.C. for an evening of cinematic immersion and discussion with Pacific Wild Executive Director, Karen McAllister and Film Director Natasha Wehn.
Return of the Great Bear is a short, inspiring and heart-felt documentary that testifies to the strength of bringing people from all walks of life together to make a difference for wildlife. This film tells the story of the decades-long fight to ban grizzly bear trophy hunting in British Columbia. While a ban finally took effect in 2017, the future of grizzly bears is still uncertain. Bans have been overturned in the past as the power in government shifted and in a time of shrinking salmon runs, climate change, industrial logging and pushback from hunting lobbyists now more than ever it is critical for people to come together again and fight for what is wild.
This in-person event promises to be a unique experience for nature lovers and film enthusiasts alike. We look forward to sharing stories and dynamic discussion and hope to see you there!

Money, eh? Never enough of it to go around for most of us, and it’s sometimes hard to imagine committing to a monthly donation to an organization you support, like Pacific Wild. But you love wildlife and you want to make a difference…
If you’re in Canada, there’s a new way to give - rounding up at the till with your debit card and having the difference donated to a registered charity in Canada! This magic happens thanks to CanadaHelps.
CanadaHelps partnered with Moka, an app that connects to your bank to automatically donate spare change from your purchases to your favourite charity. It’s an easy, painless way to give small amounts that can add up to big change – and you get a tax receipt at the end of the year.
CanadaHelps forwards the funds on to Pacific Wild on your behalf.

Sea otters are more than just adorable—they’re key to the health of our oceans! 🦦 Keep the sound on to hear this otter play with an underwater hydrophone.
This #WorldAnimalDay we’re featuring the world’s cutest predators, the sea otter. They play a crucial role in maintaining the balance of marine ecosystems by feeding on species like sea urchins preventing these animals from overgrazing on kelp forests and seagrass meadows. Without otters, these underwater forests are at risk of collapse, leading to a loss of biodiversity. 🌿🐠
The long-term benefits of sea otter recovery – such as healthier kelp forests, higher fish catches, carbon storage and tourism – could be worth as much as $53 million per year, according to UBC research published in Science Magazine.
By simply enjoying their daily meals, sea otters help keep marine ecosystems thriving and resilient. Happy World Animal Day, Otters! We salute you. 🌊✨

British Columbia votes on October 19th. Let’s not miss this opportunity– to protect wildlife like Grizzly Bears, Mountain Caribou, Wolves, Cougars, and Wild Salmon— and the waters and lands on which they rely. Who will protect nature from the climate and biodiversity crisis by meeting B.C.’s commitment to protect 30 per cent of lands and waters by 2030?
We urge you to do your research and make a choice that aligns with your values.
This province only makes up about 10% of Canada’s land area yet is home to more species than any other province in the country. The reason for such a large assemblage of species is because of the many ecosystem types that range from glacier capped mountains, arid deserts, coastal plains, and famously– our lush temperate rainforests.
Unfortunately much of this is at risk of being lost today. Like many other places in the world, B.C.’s biodiversity is on the decline due human-caused climate change, habitat loss, pollution, and destruction of natural resources. In the last several years, the provincial government has “deferred” logging on over 2.4 million hectares of old growth forest.
But deferrals aren’t permanent protections, only ensuring that logging activity is postponed until a future decision is made on the fate of the forest. Less than 1% of forests in B.C. are classified as high-productivity ancient forest ecosystems: what remains is precious. Unfortunately, B.C. government policies do not differentiate between productive and non-productive old-growth forests; companies can harvest big trees and leave small, unproductive trees and still meet their old-growth retention targets. B.C. has joined Canada’s federal commitment to protect 30% of lands and waters by 2030, but which lands will be protected, and what activities they will be protected from remains to be determined.
Governments act wisely and quickly if the biodiversity of forests is going to stand a chance of survival. Register to vote today! When you show up at the polls this month, will you be thinking about biodiversity?

Positive News! Gray wolves may soon be granted permanent protections in the United States.
U.S. Senator Cory Booker and U.S. Representative Raúl M. Grijalva introduced legislation that would establish permanent federal-level protections for wolves, grizzlies, and bison. The Tribal Heritage and American Bison, Grizzly Bear, and Wolf Restoration and Coexistence Act would also serve to enhance Indigenous-led stewardship programs and give recovery efforts permanent supports and better funding. The Act is before lawmakers now, and represents years’ worth of efforts from many different groups.
If you live in British Columbia, Canada, ask your provincial election candidates how their party plans to protect wolves.
