Photo by Cheryl Alexander // Today (March 24, 2021) the world is howling in honour of the memory of Victoria’s iconic coastal wolf, Takaya. One year ago, on Tuesday, March 24, 2020, near Shawnigan Lake on Vancouver Island, Takaya was killed by a trophy hunter approximately 50 kilometres away from where he was released in late January.⁣
⁣
Cheryl Alexander, a conservation photographer says, “Howling is a great way to let out the anguish and love that we are all feeling. It is also a way to ‘gather’ in honour of Takaya while we all must stay apart. You can howl alone or together with those you are isolating with – you can howl indoors or go out into the street or onto your balcony, howling to the stars or sun. You can howl once … or many times. Try it. You will see how great howling can feel.”⁣
⁣
Organizers invite you to participate by howling at sunset, wherever you are in the world, to honour the life and legacy of this remarkable wolf! If you’d like to share a video, please post it on social media and use the hashtag #howlfortakaya⁣

Photo by @kwexphoto // Shot on the herring grounds in the Strait of Georgia earlier this year, a bald eagle scores its meal of Pacific herring. These small, underappreciated fish are the cornerstone of marine biodiversity on the B.C. coast.⁣

Our next virtual trivia game takes place on April 28th and focuses on herring. Join our marine campaigner, Emmie Page and special guest, Sydney Dixon from Strawberry Isle Marine Research Society. You can register via the link in our bio - spots are limited!

Photo by @iantmcallister // @mongabay news recently highlighted a newly published study in which it was confirmed that southern resident killer whales (SRKWs) mainly consume Chinook salmon, but can supplement their diet when the species isn’t available. While it is reassuring that SRKWs are consuming other species, Chinook salmon still make up the majority of their diet and without stronger management efforts their future remains uncertain.⁣⁣
⁣⁣
Our marine scientist and campaigner, @emmalaipage, was quoted about the implications this research has for salmon conservation efforts in British Columbia:⁣⁣
⁣
“It can often be difficult to align the messaging of conservation organizations, academia and government,” Page said. “Having a scientific study concluding what many have observed for years is validating in itself. Going forward, more collaboration is needed between conservation organizations, First Nations, management organizations and academia. No single group has all the resources to make all the changes necessary.”⁣⁣

Photos by @iantmcallister and @geoffreymcampbell // Pacific Wild has spent the last few days in French Creek, an area in close proximity to the last remaining commercial seine and gillnet herring fishery on the B.C. coast. While spawning activity is still low, the seine fishery is set to open this evening in the Strait of Georgia (SOG). Fishermen and boats have been gathering at the docks waiting for Fisheries and Oceans Canada (DFO) to announce an opening. There is still no word on the opening of the gillnet fishery, which will hold the majority of the allowable catch for this season.⁣
⁣
Earlier this week, we had a great opportunity to speak with several herring fishers, some still fishing and others retired. We are all committed to the future of herring. Sharing perspectives on herring is an important part of our work and we appreciate the respectful dialogue that we have had. We may not all agree on how DFO is managing this fishery but there is more common ground than not. What we do know is that the way herring has been managed has led to stock collapse and closures in every other area of the B.C. coast and unless we start to address the greater ecosystem needs of herring in the SOG, history will repeat itself and everyone will lose. ⁣

Salmon image by @eiko_jones_ // The legendary @alexmorton4salmon recently published a new book called ‘Not On My Watch’, a story about her life’s work, fighting to help save British Columbia’s wild salmon. Learn more about the book via the description below and visit the link in our bio to purchase your own copy⁣
⁣
———
⁣
Alexandra Morton came north from California in the early 1980s, following her first love--the northern resident orca. In remote Echo Bay, in the Broughton Archipelago, she found the perfect place to settle into all she had ever dreamed of: a lifetime of observing and learning what these big-brained mammals are saying to each other. She was lucky enough to get there just in time to witness a place of true natural abundance, and learned how to thrive in the wilderness as a scientist and a single mother. ⁣
⁣
Then, in 1989, industrial aquaculture moved into the region, chasing the whales away. Her fisherman neighbours asked her if she would write letters on their behalf to the government explaining the damage the farms were doing to the fisheries, and one thing led to another. Soon Alex had shifted her scientific focus to documenting the infectious diseases and parasites that pour from the ocean farm pens of Atlantic salmon into the migration routes of wild Pacific salmon, and then to proving their disastrous impact on wild salmon and the entire ecosystem of the coast. ⁣
⁣
Alex stood against the farms, first representing her community, then alone, and at last as part of an uprising that built around her as ancient Indigenous governance resisted a province and a country that wouldn't obey their own court rulings. She has used her science, many acts of protest and the legal system in her unrelenting efforts to save wild salmon and ultimately the whales--a story that reveals her own doggedness and bravery but also shines a bright light on the ways other humans doggedly resist the truth. Here, she brilliantly calls those humans to account for the sake of us all.⁣

Fairy Creek Watershed is one of the last intact productive old-growth forests on Vancouver Island. Yesterday our team was on the ground hearing from the concerned and determined individuals at the @fairycreekblockade. With the injunction granted April 1, 2021 in favour of the logging company Teal-Jones, these precious ancient trees are at immediate risk of being clearcut. We need your help to ensure that B.C.’s rare ecosystems are protected now and into the future. Please sign the petition calling on the provincial government @johnhorgan4bc to demand an end to the logging of B.C.’s remaining old-growth forests. Follow @fairycreekblockade for updates and ways to get involved.
