Betrayed By Their own: Judas Wolves and the Tragic Fate of 44 Wolf Families

Uncovered documents reveal that the 'Capture, Betray, Kill' method also known as the "Judas Wolf" approach, has claimed the lives of 465 wolves over two winters.

A recent release of Freedom of Information (FOI) documents has shed new light on the controversial wolf kill program that has been in operation since 2015. The FOI documents include contractor comments and an in-depth look at the “Judas Wolf” program, a tactic in which wolves are fitted with radio collars and forced to betray their own packs by unknowingly leading contracted aerial marksmen to their families.

In 2023 and 2024 alone, at least 44 wolf packs were killed in this manner, contributing to the staggering total of 2,192 wolves killed since the program’s inception. Taxpayers have footed a hefty bill for this initiative, which has already cost over 11 million dollars.

Despite the extensive effort and massive costs associated with the wolf cull program, the province’s commitment to protecting woodland caribou remains deeply flawed. While thousands of wolves have been killed in an attempt to safeguard caribou populations, the provincial government continues to allow caribou hunting in some regions. Additionally, human disturbance continues to impact critical caribou habitat, with industrial development, logging, mining, fracking and climate change all contributing to the ongoing decline of these iconic animals.

Meanwhile, wolves—who play a natural role in maintaining ecosystem balance as a keystone species—are paying the ultimate price.
