🐟 Canada has renewed its commitment to wild Pacific salmon, announcing $412.9 million over five years to continue the Pacific Salmon Strategy Initiative (PSSI). This new funding brings total federal investment in Pacific salmon to nearly $1.1 billion over ten years.
The planned transition away from open net-pen salmon farming in B.C. waters by 2029 is a critical step. It can help reduce risks like disease and sea lice transfer, while giving wild salmon a genuine chance to recover.

This transition must also be fair, support job diversification, and sustainable economic development, especially in First Nations communities. Federal support during the phase-out, including through the expanded PSSI, will be essential to help workers and communities adapt and thrive.

📝 In January 2025, Pacific Wild submitted feedback to the federal government on its transition plan, away from open-net pen salmon farming, noting that PSSI funding could help support Indigenous communities through this change. As 2029 draws closer, there is still little clarity on how the transition will unfold, and communities continue to wait for meaningful details on what support will be available.

🐻👀 What’s on the menu for coastal black bears?

🌊🌲 From land to sea, coastal black bears are true opportunists, feeding on a wide range of foods and playing a vital role in connecting ecosystems. By moving nutrients across the landscape, they help support the health of entire coastal forests and food webs

This video showcases a variety of foods these incredible animals rely on throughout the year. Can you name them all? Drop your guesses in the comments ⬇️

⚠️ Despite being listed as a threatened species, grizzlies are once again being positioned as a problem to be managed through killing. But even within Alberta, experts and conservation groups argue that population data is incomplete, recovery is still uncertain, and killing bears won’t solve the root causes of conflict.

Killing apex predators disrupts ecosystems and can actually increase conflict. We know what actually works: securing attractants, reducing human-caused risks, and investing in coexistence. Not repeating the same mistakes that pushed grizzlies to the brink.

What’s happening in Alberta isn’t isolated. It’s a warning. British Columbia ended the grizzly trophy hunt in 2017. But without permanent legislation, it could return at any time.

If we want grizzlies protected for good, we need laws—not temporary policy decisions. It’s time to permanently ban the grizzly bear hunt in B.C.

🐻 Take action: Email the Premier and your MLA today. Tell them to enshrine a permanent ban on the grizzly bear hunt in B.C.

🐾 Happy National Pet Day!

🐕 From office sidekicks to remote work companions, meet the Pacific Wild Pack! They’re the four-legged team keeping our staff happy (and sane) wherever we work. 🐈‍⬛

From big personalities in tiny packages (looking at you, Gnocchi) to seasoned pros like Manches, who’s mastered the art of snack acquisition and strategic napping, this crew does it all. Kuma and Makita hold it down in Marine Campaigns with ocean swims, wet kisses, and top-tier office security, while Buttercup ensures every meeting meets her… nap standards.

Our remote specialists are just as essential! Patrick keeps his home office spotless (and snack-ready), Kaya leads “communications” with her signature husky commentary, and Alphonso and Zucchini bring the perfect balance of brawn, brains, and lap-based leadership to Management. Meanwhile, Nori is hard at work at sea, ensuring all onboard boxes meet inspection standards.

And of course, a special shoutout to our recent retirees, Juniper and Leon, for their many years of dedicated service (and ongoing commitment to naps, toys, and forest adventures).

🚨 Protect Environmental Assessments in B.C.!

The B.C. government is rushing changes to the Environmental Assessment process that could seriously weaken protections for land, water, wildlife, and communities while prioritizing industry over conservation.

If these proposed changes go through:
⏱️ Public comment periods could be drastically shortened
⚠️ Only “high-risk” values might be assessed, leaving many impacts unexamined
📄 Project proponents would have more control over what evidence is considered
🗣️ Public and First Nations consultation could be limited

You can make a difference! The government is seeking feedback by April 13, 2026.

🔗 Follow the links in our bio to learn more and read guidance from our friends at @wcelaw and complete the public survey.

📣Your voice matters, tell the government why environmental assessments must stay strong!
