⏳ Three days left to protect Pacific herring!

🗓️ The federal government is inviting public input on next year’s herring harvest in B.C. – submissions close November 17th. So far, over 350 Canadians have shared their voice, thank you!

🐟 Pacific herring are the foundation of our coastal food web, but commercial kill fisheries, including the herring roe fishery, catch females before they can spawn, preventing thousands of future eggs and threatening marine life that depends on them.

We’re calling on the government to:
✅ Suspend commercial herring fishing in the Strait of Georgia until populations recover, except for Indigenous Food, Social, and Ceremonial (FSC) fisheries.
✅ Create a science- and Indigenous-led recovery plan before any harvest resumes.
✅ Manage migratory and resident populations separately to protect genetic and ecological diversity.

👉Follow the link in our bio to send a pre-addressed letter to DFO.

💙 Together, we can ensure Pacific herring thrive for generations to come.

🌎 From B.C. to Scotland to Tasmania, open-net pen salmon farms are failing in practice. The stories are piling up:

🐟 In Scotland, there have been hundreds of breaches of the salmon industry’s own lice standards
💔 Mass salmon mortalities in Tasmania are being linked to systemic failures
⚖️ Questions arise over whether B.C.’s polluter-pay system actually favours salmon companies
💸 Enforcement in question as B.C. fish farm misses fine and fails to remove illegal equipment

Open-net pen salmon farming is struggling to deliver safe, sustainable results. If we care about the ocean, wild fish, and community accountability, it’s time to pay attention.

🗓️Until November 17, the federal government is accepting public feedback on next season’s herring quotas in B.C..

🐟 Every year, the Pacific coast pulses with two of nature`s greatest events: the herring spawn and the salmon run. Together, they feed forests, rivers, and the sea.
Today, this interconnected food web is faltering. Juvenile salmon depend on herring as prey to help them grow, gaining strength to survive their first months at sea. But herring populations have crashed along the coast, and in some places, they’re nearly gone.

📣 Speak up for the wild today.

Protecting Pacific herring means defending the web of life itself: from plankton to predator, from stream to sea 🌊 To learn more about the connection between salmon and herring check out our blog linked in the bio.

🌊 This week, Premier David Eby joined First Nations leaders to sign the North Coast Protection Declaration, committing to uphold Canada’s oil tanker ban which formally banned oil tankers carrying over 12,500 metric tonnes of crude oil on B.C.’s North Coast in 2018.

Led by First Nations, this declaration reinforces that true conservation is rooted in Indigenous leadership and is vital for protecting food security, cultural identity, and a sustainable coastal economy.

Next step: expand the ban southward!

Pacific Wild was honoured to attend last weekend’s Migratory Salmon Potlatch hosted on the territory of the Ḥupačasatḥ and Tseshaht Nations, with hundreds attending from as far away as California.

On Sunday, hereditary chiefs and leaders from more than two dozen nations signed a powerful declaration, calling for an immediate end to open-net pen salmon farms in B.C. to ensure that salmon populations thrive for future generations.

The weekend was filled with powerful songs, and stories of past successful fish farm removals and recovering wild salmon populations in Kwakwaka`wakw territories. This weekend proved that there is a massive momentum from Indigenous leaders to restore the balance, and put saving wild salmon first.

Pacific Wild is calling on DFO to:
⚠️ Uphold their promise to ban open-net pen salmon farms in B.C. and invest in protecting wild salmon populations

Thank you to everyone who attended the 3rd Annual Herring Symposium last week. Scientists, students, former fishermen, local tourism operators, conservationists and Tsawout Hereditary Chief Eric Pelkey came together to answer the question: what can we do to turn the tide for herring?

One action that everyone can take immediately is 👉Follow the link in our bio to send a pre-addressed letter to DFO.
🗓️Until November 17, the federal government is accepting public feedback on next season’s herring quotas in B.C..
⏰Speaking up now while the government is collecting feedback is one of the most effective ways to have your voice heard.

Pacific Wild is calling on DFO to:
⚠️ Suspend all commercial herring fisheries in the Strait of Georgia, excluding Food, Social and Ceremonial or Spawn-on-Kelp
📄 Co-develop a Recovery Plan with First Nations
🐟 Shift from extraction to restoration

📣 Add your voice today.

Special thanks to Jim Shortreed and the Herring Conservation and Restoration Society for inviting us to speak and organizing the event.
